Dr Jino George is an experimental physical chemist by training. He received his PhD in “chiral plasmonics” (2012) from CSIR-NIIST Thiruvananthapuram. Later, he had a short stint as a visiting research fellow in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Subsequently, he spent five years at the University of Strasbourg, France, as a post-doctoral fellow. At Strasbourg, he studied the effect of strong light-matter interaction on the chemical and physical properties of molecules and materials. In 2017, he joined IISER Mohali as a faculty member in the Department of Chemical Sciences, and his research focuses on understanding the properties of hybrid light-matter states and their application to controlling chemical reaction rates. At IISER Mohali, he independently developed the idea of cavity catalysis, that a chemical reaction can be precisely controlled (bond-selectively) at the molecular level through vibrational strong coupling. He is also interested in studying the fundamentals of transport behaviour of light-matter states, known as polaritronics. He handles projects to integrate photons with functional materials and develop next-generation optoelectronics and photonics devices.
